From our friend Dennis Fox. You'll often find Dennis on the corner of Coffeen Ave and Brundage Lane holding a sign. Give him a wave next time you see him.
On November the 5th we can vote to lower our sales tax to 5%. With high prices and taxes, it’s become a hot topic in Sheridan County. In 2022, over 5,000 voters chose lower taxes.
Since this is the only tax that we have direct control over, many will vote “Against” higher taxes.
Why do some like higher taxes? At the check-out counter do we “vote” to pay a higher amount? When you buy a car or house, do you negotiate a “higher” price?
Well of course not. No thinking person would pay more than necessary. Everything we buy in our lives, we strive to pay the least amount possible. It is the American free market system. Buyer wants to pay less and seller wants to charge more. When a price is finally agreed on, both are happy. It’s a win-win for all concerned.
So why is it different when it comes to taxes? Why do some willingly impose higher taxes on themselves and everyone else? Why do some prefer to drag a six pound ball-n-chain, instead of a five pound?
The answer is marketing. We’ve been subjected to deceptive marketing that tries to sell us on the falsehood that “high taxes are good for us.” And some have bought into this myth.
All Americans know the truth that lower prices and lower taxes are always better. We’ve spent our entire lives knowing the difference between “needs” and “wants.” We’ve tightened our own belts and it’s time for government to do the same. We work to get value for our dollars and it’s the same with our taxes.
We thought that government was spending our money wisely. They are not. They’ve forgotten the difference between “wants” (Brooks Street flower-pot) and “needs.” Now they just constantly tell us they need more money. Enough!
In this economy, we can’t afford higher taxes and endless government waste. We need a tax break and we need it now!
The last time we voted on this 1% “Cap Tax” was 2020. And nobody told us that it would still be with us in 2025. This time, if re-imposed, it’ll hang around until another $40 million is extracted from us. That could be 2030 or beyond!
How are your finances looking 10 years from now? Can we afford to re-impose the highest County Sales Tax in Wyoming? And, yes, 6% is the highest County Sales Tax in Wyoming. Only the ski areas add an additional 2%. We would be wise to vote ourselves a temporary tax break.
Don’t be fooled, again, by the high tax myth. Let’s push pause on higher taxes and enjoy paying a lower 5% sales tax. Because lower taxes are always better.
